Gobsmacked fans say ‘Aston Villa are cooking’ with Marco Asensio signing ‘close’

Aston Villa have stunned the football community with the signing of Marco Asensio reportedly very close.

Asensio, 27, is set to leave Real Madrid upon the expiry of his contract next month. The attacking midfielder, who has played on both the left and the right as well as through the middle, will then be available on a free transfer.

According to Spanish outlet Marca, Villa boss Unai Emery has acted swiftly to put them in pole position for his signature. He's said to be keen to make Asensio a part of his starting XI next season.

Asensio has spent eight years at the Santiago Bernabeu after signing from Mallorca in 2015. He's racked up 285 appearances for Los Blancos but has mainly featured from the bench.

He's just enjoyed his best season to date, registering 12 goals and eight assists in all competitions so far, which is also said to have attracted the attention of PSG.

On the international stage, Asensio has been capped 35 times by Spain and featured in their Tokyo 2020 Olympics squad.
