Graeme Souness accused of ‘British exceptionalism’ in "Latin" analysis on Sky

Graeme Souness has been criticised  of 'British exceptionalism' in his analysis of Erik Lamela.

The Tottenham player went to ground in the incident which saw Anthony Martial sent off for Manchester United.

Lamela initially put an arm into the upper body for Martial, before the French striker responded with a hand to the Spurs star's cheek, which forced him to the ground.

Martial was given his marching orders by referee Anthony Taylor, while Lamela was let off the hook despite a VAR check.

The incident was reviewed at half-time of the game in the Sky Sports studio by pundit Souness.

In the analysis, he made a remark about the mentality of 'Latin' countries.

"If Martial is going then Lamela has to go," Souness said.

"He raises his hands, Martial lashes out, it's like a tickle across your chops and he's gone down.

"It is pathetic. It's very Latin.

"If one goes, both have to go. It's pathetic.

"Is this what the English game is about? We, the Brits, do it differently.

"I've played in a Latin country, I've worked in Latin countries, I know how they see the game.

"Lamela will sleep well tonight thinking he has done a great piece of work for his team.

"That is not us."

Souness' comments were not well received on social media.

One journalist commented: "Ah come on Souness, less of the British exceptionalism there please."

Another viewer responded: "Oh good, Graeme Souness adding the borderline-racist 'we Brits don't roll around like that' angle again."

While another added: "Graeme Souness needs to be called out on his repeated racist, xenophobic, exceptionalist opinions.

"Not only is it irrelevant, uninsightful football punditry; it is unacceptable social commentary."

A further viewer said: "Souness insinuating that Lamela dived because that’s what 'Latin countries' do, and that’s not what 'we' do in the 'English' Premier League. Vardy and Grealish fall over six times a game."
