Grant rates Henderson’s Man Utd display and makes Solskjaer selection joke

Lee Grant was given a chance in goal during the second half of Manchester United 's 1-0 friendly loss to Aston Villa, replacing Dean Henderson in between the sticks.

Henderson and Grant were given the nod over David de Gea, who played the full 90 minutes in both of Spain's Nations League games last week.

Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a difficult decision to make over who should be first choice this season, with Henderson returning from an impressive loan spell at Sheffield United.

And Grant has given his thoughts on the situation, complimenting Henderson's display against Villa and joking that his own performance has "made the gaffer's job even more difficult".

Grant kept a clean sheet during his 15 minutes on the pitch and, speaking to MUTV after the game, the 37-year-old said: "I thought he [Henderson] did fantastically well…

"David's come back from international duty as sharp as ever. And I've kept a clean sheet today and made the gaffer's job even more difficult next week."

Solskjaer was also impressed with Henderson's performance, name-checking the goalkeeper as one of three main positives from the game despite the result.

"The result wasn't the main thing," Solskjaer told MUTV. "Some positives, as well though: some good positives, some individual positives.

"I thought Deano showed his authority back there and he plays as a proper Man United keeper, especially second-half, [and] you see Teden when he comes on what an exciting prospect he is.

"Donny was maybe the biggest plus in the outfield. He's such a finder of space and he creates time for himself with his timing and movement. I was very happy with his performance.

"In the first half I thought we played some good stuff and created chances. The most important thing is valuable minutes because this pre-season is such a strange and different one for us. We've had two weeks back and it's only one week now until we start the league.

"Of course, the Europa League will help us in that respect because the players who have played in that over the summer don't really need that much, and some of the international games. But you could clearly see that some of them need minutes."
