Incoming Tottenham boss Paulo Fonseca admits Mourinho had major impact on career

Former AS Roma boss Paulo Fonseca has cited Jose Mourinho as a key influence in his managerial career as he looks to replace his compatriot as Tottenham Hotspur head coach.

With Jose Mourinho going the other way, a bizarre turn of events means it is likely the two Portuguese men will take on each other’s roles next season.

Reports by FootballLondon state Fonseca will be announced head coach next week with ‘talks progressing’ and only minor details of his contract still being discussed.

This comes following Spurs’ failed talks with Antonio Conte last week and new chief football officer Fabio Paratici’s decision to appoint Fonseca, 48, as a back-up.

Speaking to The Athletic, Fonseca said: “When Jose Mourinho appeared, this new mentality appeared.

“Jose was so important because he left the country (after upsetting the odds and winning the Champions League with Porto in 2004) and had so much success.

“This changed the way people look at our coaches.”

Mourinho was unable to end Spurs’ trophy drought in his one and a half seasons in charge in North London after he was sacked just before the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City.

In contrast to Mourinho’s style which gathered much criticism, replacement Fonseca is known for his attacking brand of football and man management which he implemented at Roma.

Sections of the Spurs faithful, however, will be underwhelmed by the appointment with the head coach having only managed a seventh-placed league finish with Roma last season.

They will hope the new boss can get the best out of players like Tanguy Ndombele who suffered at times under Mourinho.
