Jamie Carragher mocks Cristiano Ronaldo as Man Utd storm to 3-1 win over Arsenal

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher had another dig at Cristiano Ronaldo during Manchester United’s victory over Arsenal.

The Portuguese ace had to content himself with a place on the bench for the fifth time in six Premier League matches. Erik ten Hag opted to give £82million man Antony his full United debut in a three pronged frontline also containing Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford.

The Dutchman was rewarded with a satisfying debut goal from Antony and a second half brace from Rashford. And Carragher took aim at the former Real Madrid ace with another dig.

“‘What will happen to Man Utd without Ronaldo’s goals?’” Carragher tweeted ironically, referencing the many concerns United fans and ex-players had about life after Ronaldo.

Ronaldo helped himself to 18 Premier League goals and three assists in his first season back at Old Trafford last season. At times, it was a one man show at United, who struggled under both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

However, Carragher was still unconvinced by Ronaldo’s contributions at United, slamming the club’s decision to bring him back to Old Trafford last season. “I always thought he [Ronaldo] was a bizarre signing,” Carragher said at the start of the current campaign.

“I always felt this situation would come, even if Ronaldo did great for you. He signed a two-year deal plus another year, which I couldn’t believe, and he’s never going to play second fiddle to anyone.

“But, as players, at a certain stage in your career we all know that you’re not the same player, and his career has gone on longer because he’s such a great professional. But the fact he’s now 37, 38 this season, he’s not the same player.

“He’s still a great goal scorer but he’s not the same player. No other club in Europe at this moment wants him. I might be wrong.”
