Joe Willock poised for new role at Emirates despite Arsenal’s transfer activity

Arsenal’s Joe Willock has been given a boost ahead of the upcoming season with manager Mikel Arteta expected to give him chances in a new position.

Willock has just returned from an incredible loan spell at Newcastle where he scored vital goals to keep the Magpies afloat, becoming the youngest ever Premier League player to score in seven consecutive games.

The Hale End graduate thrived in his role as a box-to-box midfielder under Steve Bruce, having looked short of technical prowess when implemented in the number-10 role by Arteta until January.

Now Arteta has made it clear Willock will feature next season even as the club reportedly pursues the likes of Martin Odegaard and Houssem Aouar, hinting the boss sees him in a deeper role going forward.

When asked whether Willock will be part of his plans for the new season, Arteta said: “Well, for sure. Because he has a contract and he’s going to be here. That’s for sure.

“I’m really happy that things have gone so well for him because of the potential he has.

“I think it was great for him to go away and have a different experience and he has grabbed that opportunity in a really positive and remarkable way.

"He’ll be back with us, we’ll have those conversations with him and plan the next years for him."

Willock’s engine and goal-scoring ability from midfield are crucial assets for Arteta as he looks to secure Champions League football next season.

With Dani Ceballos, Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira off this summer, the youngster could have his major breakthrough in a red and white shirt while partnering the likes of Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny.
