Liverpool look set to allow Gini Wijnaldum to depart the club for free after five years of service at Anfield, with the midfielder rumoured to be of interest to Spanish giants Barcelona.

If the Netherlands international does depart, Liverpool will need to find some form of replacement for him, given the presence he poses in Klopp’s midfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have been linked with a number of midfielders scattered all over the continent, but one rumour that seemingly won’t go away is Spanish international Isco reportedly set to arrive at Anfield.

The 29-year-old has endured a miserable 2020/21 campaign for Los Blancos, failing to register a goal for Real Madrid in 27 appearances in all competitions

Some Liverpool fans may question why their side are interested in a midfielder that has more yellow cards to his name than goals this season, but Isco’s talent is undisputed, at times playing a crucial part in Real Madrid sides that have won both La Liga’s and Champions League’s.

His career honours list makes for remarkable reading, with a trophy haul that includes two La Liga’s, four Champions Leagues, one Copa del Rey and four Club World Cup’s.

However, his recent dismal form has reportedly drastically lowered Real Madrid’s valuation of the player. Isco’s contract expires in 2022, meaning if Zidane’s side are to receive any fee for the midfielder, he’ll have to be sold at the end of this season.

Rumours in Spain suggest that Los Blancos would be willing to let Isco leave for as little as under €30m.

Liverpool will have to fend off interest from a number of different clubs across Europe, with Roma, fresh after appointing Jose Mourinho as manager from next season, favourites to secure his signature.

Italian outlet Diario Gol have claimed that Mourinho and director of sport Tiago Pinto have set their sights on Isco, with the aim of offering him the chane to revitalise his career in the Italian Capital.

Should Isco wish to stay in his home country, Sevilla are also one of many potential suitors, though it is unlikely they will be able to afford the midfielder even with the drastic drop in price.

Isco was an unused substitute as Real Madrid crashed out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage, stumbling to a 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, losing 3-1 on aggregate.

Speculation surrounding the future of manager Zinedine Zidane has already begun in the aftermath of the defeat to Chelsea.

Real currently sit second in the La Liga table, two points off top spot behind fierce rivalls Atletico.

It appears unlikely that Isco will feature much, if at all in the latter stages of the league run-in, with his future looking increasingly like it is away from the Santiago Bernabeu.
