Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema has been found guilty of conspiracy to blackmail a fellow footballer with a sex tape.

A judge sentenced Benzema to a one-year suspended jail term and ordered him to pay a €75,000 (£63,000; $84,000) fine.

The 33-year-old was one of five people put on trial over an attempt to extort former Lyon and Marseille winger Mathieu Valbuena.

Benzema had been accused of helping the four other men blackmail Valbuena over a video that had been taken from Valbuena’s phone.

The scandal, which dates back to June 2015 when the two players were at a France training camp, rocked French football and led to both players losing their national team places.

Benzema has since returned to the France team.

He has always denied the accusations against him and claimed he was only trying to help Valbuena get rid of the video.

Benzema did not attend court in Versailles for the decision as he was preparing for Real Madrid's Champions League match on Wednesday against Sheriff Tiraspol.

His lawyer announced that he would appeal the decision.

He said: "We are quite flabbergasted by this judgment. An appeal is necessary. He will be exonerated at the height of this appeal."

Valbuena currently plays for Greek club Olympiakos.
