Kepa Arrizabalaga faces losing his position as Spain No 1 as Luis Enrique weighs up replacement after keeper’s demotion to the Chelsea bench
- Kepa Arrizabalaga has spent the last five games on the bench for Chelsea
- The Spain international has not played since a 2-2 draw with Arsenal last month
- It puts his position as Spain’s No 1 in question, with boss Luis Enrique concerned
Kepa Arrizabalaga faces losing his spot as Spain’s No 1 following his demotion to the Chelsea bench.
The 25-year-old, who moved to Stamford Bridge for £72million in 2018, has been placed on the bench by Frank Lampard for each of his side’s last five fixtures, with Willy Caballero taking his place.
It comes after the Spaniard’s form was questioned by his manager, Lampard insisting he didn’t take the decision ‘lightly’ after a series of high-profile errors.

According to AS, that decision may now also impact his spot in the national side.
They report that Luis Enrique is concerned by Kepa’s absence from Chelsea’s starting line-up and is now considering his own plans to replace the keeper.
Kepa had ousted David de Gea as Spain’s No 1 while Robert Moreno was in charge, but with Enrique back in the hotseat the former Barcelona boss may choose to bring the Manchester United shot-stopper back in from the cold.
It is a major decision to be made ahead of Euro 2020 this summer.
Spain have been drawn in Group E alongside both Poland and Sweden. Their final group opponent will come from next month’s play-offs.
