Matildas captain Sam Kerr has earned high praised from her club coach Emma Hayes after a starring display in Chelsea’s 3-1 English FA WSL home win over Manchester City.
Kerr’s weekend performance included a goal as champions Chelsea handed City their first defeat of the season.
“I’m so happy for Sam Kerr today – I’m so happy the ball’s gone in,” Hayes said.
“Sam works her socks off. There’s a huge expectation and you could see the way the team reacted (to her goal). They were over the moon for her.”
Chelsea remain unbeaten in the FA WSL, with three wins and a draw from four matches.
They trail joint leaders Arsenal and Everton, who have a 100 per cent record after four games, by two points.
Arsenal, who are coached by Australian mentor Joe Montemurro and whose side includes Kerr’s Matildas teammate Caitlin Foord, cruised to a 5-0 away win over Brighton.
Montemurro said attacking weapon Foord, whose performance included an assist, had a “different dimension”.
“We’re very happy that she’s beginning to find her rhythm and her feet,” Montemurro told the Arseblog News website.
“We know that she’s going to get better and better.”
Everton beat West Ham 3-1, with Matildas winger Hayley Raso coming on as second-half substitute for the winners.
West Ham, whose side included Matildas goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold, have just one point from four matches.
