Like his predecessor Jeremy Corbyn, British politician Starmer openly supports the Gunners and has been offering his opinions on the current Arsenal team.

Mikel Arteta’s side are currently eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table with 10 games left and are chasing their first title since 2004.

Several players have impressed at the north London club this season, including England’s Bukayo Saka, who has registered 12 goals and 10 assists across 28 top-flight matches, and other stars such as Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard.

Starmer, though, feels there is quality across the entire squad as he told The High Performance Podcast on Monday: ‘If I take the current Arsenal team, which I think is fantastic, what is incredible is two things.

‘One – there is not a standout star. When Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang played for Arsenal, he was outstanding and everyone tried to let everything go through him.

‘Now, we’ve got a team where quite often, after the game, it’s quite hard to say [who the best player was].

‘That’s really good as everyone is playing well in their positions. You’re not relying on one or two stars, you’ve got a genuinely strong squad.’

Starmer then lauded Arsenal boss Arteta and hailed the Gunners manager as an ‘incredible leader’.

‘I also think with Mikel Arteta, you’ve got an incredible leader,’ Starmer added. ‘He’s managed players in different ways.

‘Every player in the Arsenal squad is probably playing better than I’ve ever seen them play before. That’s quite an extraordinary thing to bring about.

‘If you take the example of Granit Xhaka, when he stormed off the pitch… I was there, and I said he won’t play for Arsenal again.

‘Mikel Arteta turned him around and now he’d be the first player on the team-sheet every week. Incredible leadership from Mikel Arteta.’
