Lineker blasts ‘b*******’ unpopular opinion in Salah and Rooney debate

Gary Lineker has slammed the view that Mohamed Salah is a “way better football player” than Wayne Rooney.

The England legend took issue with a post shared on Twitter, which showed another user claiming the Liverpool star has surpassed retired Manchester United icon Rooney.

The controversial tweet read: “Unpopular Opinion: Salah is a way better football player than Rooney ever was. English tax makes Rooney look better. Rooney lives on that one bicycle goal in the [Manchester] derby.” And it no doubt proved unpopular among some, including Lineker who responded with a blunt tweet of his own.

Lineker simply responded with a quote-tweet saying: “B*****s,” and his point of view seemed to resonate as it collected 20,000 likes on the social media site.

The debate comes after Liverpool’s Community Shield win over Manchester City on Saturday where Salah converted a penalty. It got the forward off the mark for the new campaign, having netted 31 in each of his two previous seasons and scored 157 goals in total for the Reds.

Who do you think was better in their prime out of Rooney and Salah? Let us know in the comments section.

Salah, 30, was a relatively late bloomer among football’s elite stars. He has won three Premier League Golden Boot awards along with one league title, a Champions League medal and his first FA Cup last season.

In comparison, Rooney was both United and England’s golden boy from his teen years. He fulfilled all expectations placed on him from a young age by going on to become the Red Devils and national team all-time leading goal-scorer.

His 253 goals in all competitions for United are yet to be matched by his Egyptian counterpart, while his trophy haul of five league titles is far greater than the Liverpool superstar can hope to achieve.

Rooney, however, does not have a Premier League Golden Boot to his name, having often played in a front-two and dropped deeper in the latter part of his career.
