Lionel Messi was accused of ‘giving up’ by Steve McManaman during Barcelona’s embarrassing Champions League defeat against Bayern Munich.
The Bundesliga giants overpowered their opponents to book a place in next week’s semi-final against either Manchester City or Lyon, running out 8-2 winners following an astonishingly one-sided contest.
Barcelona arrived in Lisbon in a state of disaray following a calamitous end to the domestic season culminated in Quique Setien’s side surrendering their Spanish league title to Real Madrid.
Bayern might have been strong favourites, but nobody could have foreseen such an astonishing scoreline, scoring four times in each half as Barcelona were subjected to their heaviest defeat since 1943.
Messi, whose future is the matter of intense speculation following a series of reported bust-ups behind the scenes, was powerless to prevent his side from the most humiliating defeat in their modern history.
But former Real Madrid star McManaman felt Barcelona’s talisman was as guilty as any of his team-mates for failing to turn up.
‘He’s a magician, he’s brilliant, he’s arguably the greatest player ever,’ McManaman told BT Sport.
‘But he has to work harder, especially on nights like this when they are getting absolutely battered.
‘He just gave in before, Alaba just ran off him he never even wanted, he only had to run five yards, and he never wanted to run at all.
