Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has same problem Brendan Rodgers had before he was sacked

Jurgen Klopp faces his toughest challenge to date at Liverpool this season and it’s ominously similar to the problem Brendan Rodgers had before he lost his job at Anfield five years ago. It’s been an incredible journey for Liverpool fans ever since Klopp took charge of the Reds back in October 2015.

The German coach promised he would break Liverpool’s duck by winning their maiden Premier League title and he duly delivered in brilliant fashion last season.

That came after the dramatic Champions League triumph on 2019 with Klopp ensuring his place among Anfield folklore for decades to come.

Rodgers was unable to reach those heights at Liverpool, although he did come close in 2014.

The club is also in a far better financial position now than when Rodgers was in charge at Anfield.

But Klopp now faces a very similar test to the one when he first took charge of Liverpool back in 2015.

Rodgers lost his job after just 11 games in all competitions in the 2015/16 season.

While there is no chance of Klopp following the same path, the former Borussia Dortmund boss must overcome what Rodgers struggled to do.

The now Leicester boss didn’t have a Virgil van Dijk to call upon during his time on Merseyside and Klopp’s defence was leaky before the Dutchman arrived in 2018.

Rodgers couldn’t find a settled back line in his final few games in charge as Liverpool’s defence and that ultimately cost him in the end.

Liverpool have so far coped with the loss of Van Dijk well with Fabinho and Joe Gomez looking solid at the back.

Klopp’s biggest test though will come further down the line with Van Dijk expected to miss the remainder of the season.

How the Liverpool boss manages the situation in defence could be the difference between whether they’re able to retain their title or not.

He may well dip into the January transfer window to bring in a central defender to provide more cover.

Schalke defender Ozan Kabak is said to be a top target with Liverpool reportedly willing to offer £20million.

There are still 10 games before the January window opens though and Klopp won’t want to hold on until then.

Fabinho and Gomez already look like a solid partnership, but are they capable of leading Liverpool to the title? Only time will tell.
