Liverpool have already been given Kalvin Phillips green light by Pep Guardiola

Liverpool have already been given the green light by Pep Guardiola to pursue Kalvin Phillips. The Manchester City boss has previously stated he would not stand in the way of any player from moving to a club he wants to join.

Liverpool are linked with a late summer move for Phillips. Jurgen Klopp is still keen to add another midfielder to his squad after a complete overhaul in that position.

Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo are all new additions to Klopp’s squad. There have been five major midfield departures, with Jordan Henderson and Fabinho the latest two to have moved on.

A report from talkSPORT earlier this week claimed Liverpool were considering making a bid for Phillips. It could end a difficult 12 months for the former Leeds star, who has struggled with injury and been unable to catch the eye of Guardiola when fit.

Liverpool are hoping to have a better season and compete with City again for the Premier League title. But Guardiola would seemingly have no problem in strengthening a direct rival.

He sold Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal last summer. In October, Guardiola explained why he allowed the duo to make the move to the Emirates, declaring it wouldn’t be fair to stop them from joining a club they want to join.

Guardiola said: “Every player is different. (From) my point of view, the guys who gave us what they gave us – Raheem [Sterling], Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel – they deserved to choose because if they didn’t go to Chelsea or Arsenal, they would have stayed here.

“They belong at a big club. We want all of them to have good memories about their time at the club, all of the people that care about them and their families.

“Who are we to say ‘you can’t go there’? I don’t like it. We have incredibly good transfers; everyone is happy.

“I don’t have a bad word for them, because of them we are who we are. Joe Hart, David Silva, Vincent Kompany… thanks to them, we are who we are.

“This is like a process. Like families – grandfathers, fathers, sons and daughters. I don’t judge others – they can do whatever they want. Every situation is different. But I don’t like saying you can’t go here or there.”

Liverpool will be hoping Guardiola sticks to his word if they make an official approach for Phillips. They would also have to convince the player to make the move to Anfield.
