Liverpool's reluctance, or failure, to seriously strengthen in the transfer window last summer came back to bite them this season.
A serious amount of injuries saw Liverpool's title defence slip away and now Jurgen Klopp's side find themselves in a fight for a Champions League spot.
Despite the number of injuries this campaign being unusually high, the message is clear – Liverpool must strengthen this summer.
With struggles at the back and at the front, both areas will be a priority for Klopp as this year's summer transfer window fast approaches.
Below, Mirror Sport takes a look at the latest Liverpool transfer rumours.
Liverpool 'leading the race' for Malen
According to a report from Dutch outlet Voetbal Internacional, Liverpool are leading the race to sign PSV Eindhoven star Donyell Malen.
The Dutch forward, who spent two years in Arsenal's academy, has been linked with several top European clubs.
The 22-year-old has scored 17 goals in 29 Eredivisie appearances this season and the report claims he could be available for as little as £25m this summer.
Klopp to Bayern is "next step"
Former Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller believes Jurgen Klopp's "next step" is to become Bayern Munich boss.
Speaking to Sport 1, Weidenfeller said: "If the situation arises like this, I don't know whether he will turn down a second Bayern offer.
"Jurgen was already in conversation with Bayern before he landed in Dortmund. It's the next step for Jurgen, as long as he still wants to be on the pitch every day."
Reds eye move for Belotti
Liverpool have become the latest Premier League side to be linked with Andrea Belotti, with Italian outlet Tuttosport claiming the Reds are interested in the Torino forward.
Belotti is out of contract with the Serie A side in 2022 and he is said to be attracting a lot of interest, with Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Roma, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Lyon and Forentina named alongside Liverpool as suitors.
