Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will be left scratching his head, and potentially kicking over dustbins in a rage, following an injury to Joe Gomez.

The Reds defender has suffered a significant blow while away on international duty with England.

Klopp was already without Virgil van Dijk with the Dutchman expected to miss at least the majority of the rest of the season.

He suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury during the recent Merseyside derby draw with Everton.

Gomez had been a regular in Van Dijk’s absence, though had been partnered with a number of different Anfield stars.

Joel Matip would have been the first option, though he has only just returned from injury, with Fabinho also proving himself to be more than capable of slotting in at the back before he also suffered an inury.

Klopp may have to go with that pair regularly, when both fit, should Gomez face an extended spell on the sidelines now.

Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips are Reds youngsters that have also been given opportunities in Van Dijk’s absence, though Klopp is expected to want a more experienced pairing.

The German boss has previously spoken about James Milner’s ability at the back, while Andrew Robertson could also shift across from his role at left-back.

Another option for Klopp would be to dip into the January transfer market when the window reopens.

Liverpool also face problems at right-back with Trent Alexander-Arnold reportedly out for up to a month.

The Reds believe it is too early to put a timeline on the calf injury, which ruled Alexander-Arnold out of England’s squad.

Liverpool have until November 21 to prepare for their next game with the international break having only just begun.
