Man City star Benjamin Mendy out of Champions League second leg vs Real Madrid

Manchester City left-back Benjamin Mendy will miss the second leg of his side's Champions League clash with Real Madrid .

Pep Guardiola faces a potential defensive headache for next month's crucial Etihad showdown, with Mendy suspended after picking up a yellow card in City's impressive 2-1 win at the Bernabeu.

Mendy collected yellows in both group stage games against Atalanta, meaning he was one just booking away from a one-game ban.

And he was cautioned less than 30 minutes into Wednesday's first-leg last-16 clash, receiving a yellow for a clumsy challenge on Madrid midfielder Luka Modric which ensures the Frenchman will miss the return game against Madrid.

City boss Guardiola is already sweating on the fitness of first-choice centre-back Aymeric Laporte.Laporte suffered another injury blow as he was substituted just 33 minutes into Wednesday's game, having missed most of this season with a serious knee injury.

The most likely man to replace Mendy at left-back for the Madrid clash on March 17 is Oleksandr Zinchenko, who was sent off in his most recent appearance when he returned from injury in City's 2-0 Premier League defeat to Tottenham.

Joao Cancelo could also fill in, although he has failed to nail down a regular spot in his favoured position at right-back since joining City in the summer.

Laporte, meanwhile, could now be a doubt for Sunday's Carabao Cup final against Aston Villa as City await news of his latest injury blow.

The French centre-back was making only his fourth appearance since recovering from a serious knee injury – and is yet to complete a full 90 minutes following his return.

Laporte had been moving gingerly during the first half at the Santiago Bernabeu, before he sat on the turf to receive treatment.

Medical staff attended to the 25-year-old, and at one stage approached him with a stretcher, before Laporte rose to his feet and hobbled off the field.

Guardiola made an immediate substitution, sending Fernandinho on in Laporte's place.

Laporte had been replaced after 58 minutes of City's win over Leicester on Saturday, with the Madrid fixture his third appearance in eight days.
