Raheem Sterling is the most racially abused footballer in England, says a player protection service.

Of 98 race hate slurs recorded during Manchester City’s 2-1 Premier League defeat by Chelsea and Leicester’s clash with Newcastle, most were directed at the City and England striker, 26.

Data analysts Sportradar also said 13 of 30 abusive messages sent to City stars during the club’s away game against Newcastle – the first since they were declared champions – targeted Sterling.

And Sheffield United’s John Fleck received up to 40 violent threats, with trolls threatening to “kick him in the head”.

Sportradar’s Andreas Krannich said: “Both during and after the social media boycott we’ve still seen racist and other forms of abuse being posted.

“Of matches we’ve monitored in recent weeks, Sterling has received the most racial abuse. We’ve also seen monkey emojis posted on the Instagram account of Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

“Tottenham’s Gareth Bale was called a paedophile and Sheffield United’s John Fleck also received more than 40 instances of personal abuse following an on-field incident, with people threatening to go and kick him in the head, among other things.”

He added: “Sportradar’s intelligence and investigations team can identify the people behind it, track down these trolls and enable sports and players to take action.

“But the whole sports industry needs to work together to stop this happening.”
