Paul Pogba has turned down the opportunity to join Manchester City this summer, according to reports. Pogba is set to leave Manchester United at the end of his contract but will not be joining their local rivals.

The Athletic claims City offered the France star a ‘flattering proposal’ to sign on a free transfer. However, he instead prefers the ‘whole package’ offered by another club interested in signing him.

Pogba’s representatives have therefore informed City he will not be joining them. Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and his former side Juventus are all linked with the 29-year-old’s signature.

City boss Pep Guardiola is looking to strengthen in midfield. Fernandinho is set to leave the club at the end of the season after surprising his manager by announcing his departure at a press conference in April.

Pogba was a target for Guardiola to bolster his options in the middle of the park. Despite coming through the ranks at United and spending six years in the first team, the 29-year-old gave serious thought to the idea of moving to the Etihad.

However, just days after the interest surfaced, Pogba has decided against the move. City’s interest in the much-maligned star was a topic of discussion on Sky Sports’ Super Sunday programme at the weekend.

Former Liverpool captain Jamie Redknapp claimed it would be a “no-brainer” for City. However, Redknapp’s old team-mate Jamie Carragher was hugely critical of the idea.

“I wouldn’t go anywhere near him,” Carragher said. “You win the league every year, you get 95 to 100 points every year, but Paul Pogba doesn’t work hard enough or as much as these other City players.

“Pep might be able to get it out of him, and there’s no doubt he’s got ability, but when you see the other creative players in the City squad – Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva – these are brilliant players who don’t stop running and don’t stop working from minute one to minute 90.

“That’s what makes Man City what they are. They’re a great team, brilliant manager with great individuals… I’m not doubting his quality but he doesn’t work hard enough. If anyone says he gives 100 per cent in every game, that’s a lie.”

Pogba has made 226 appearances in his second spell for United, scoring 39 goals. He is unlikely to play again this season after suffering an injury in the loss at Liverpool in April.
