Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already ‘asked’ the club’s transfer chiefs to sign a new centre-back this summer, according to reports. Newly-appointed football director John Murtough will head up United’s transfer business for the first time in the upcoming window. Former Red Devils midfielder Darren Fletcher is also part of the club’s recruitment team as technical director.
United are linked with a host of big-name targets heading into the summer.
The renewal of Edinson Cavani’s contract earlier this week puts a move for strikers Harry Kane or Erling Haaland in doubt.
However, there are other areas on the pitch that Solskjaer wants to improve in.
Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane is one of a number of centre-backs who have been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Villarreal’s Pau Torres and Sevilla ace Jules Kounde are also reported targets.
Duncan Castles of the Transfer Window Podcast says the centre of defence is a key area Solskjaer wants to strengthen.
And Castles says Solskjaer has “asked” the club’s recruitment team to bring in a player in that position.
Right-back and central midfield are also areas United are claimed to be keen on strengthening.

Meanwhile, United are sweating over the fitness of club captain Harry Maguire.
Maguire suffered ankle ligament damage in Sunday’s win over Aston Villa at Villa Park.
The England international will miss the visit of rivals Liverpool on Thursday, as well as the final two Premier League matches of the season against Fulham and Wolves.
However, Solskjaer is still hopeful Maguire will be fit for the Europa League final against Villarreal on May 26.
“The good news is it wasn’t broken, there was no fracture, but of course a ligament injury is serious,” Solskjaer said.
“If I’m very positive, and that’s maybe stretching it, I’m hopeful he might be ready for it.
“I don’t think he’ll play in the league again but we’ll do everything we can to get him ready for the final.
“It’s about the long term. If he’s fit then he’ll play for us and if he’s not he won’t.
“But, as I said, we are hopeful that he’ll be ready and if he’s ready for us he’ll probably be ready for the Euros.”
