Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told he isn’t protecting Harry Maguire amid slump

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to tell Harry Maguire to do the basics, but also needs to change the way he sets up his team to help accommodate the defender. That’s the opinion of former Premier League goalkeeper Shaka Hislop.

Maguire has endured a torrid start to the season, having seen his form drop dramatically for club and country.

The centre-back was dropped by England boss Gareth Southgate after an incident on holiday in Mykonos over the summer, and was sent off in his most recent outing after being recalled to the side.

Maguire saw red against Denmark on Wednesday night as England suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat in the Nations League.

His club football hasn’t been much better, with the defender facing criticism after United’s humiliating 6-1 thrashing at the hands of Tottenham before the international break.

But Hislop believes Solskjaer isn’t doing enough to help the defender because of the way he sets his team up for games.

Speaking to ESPN FC, he explained that United’s policy of pressing high up the pitch and failing to cover the defence can leave Maguire unprotected and up against quicker opposition.

He warned that due to the former Leicester man’s lack of pace, he needs to be told to simply go out and do the simple things while being covered by the midfield when necessary.

Hislop said: “I’d tell him ‘just do the simple things, don’t try and impose yourself on the game’.

“The challenge to that is that you can be a slow defender, but the team has to play to that.

“I say that because Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spent the kind of money that he did on Harry Maguire, but United as a team can’t cater to someone who isn’t quick.

“They’re so lacking in confidence as a back four and defensive unit that they have to press high up the park.

“They have nobody who sits in front of the back four and offers any sort of protection.

“To country that, they press high up and as early as they possibly can.

“Once you play out of that pressure, players like Harry Maguire and his lack of speed get exposed.

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer isn’t playing the kind of system that protects Harry Maguire’s deficiencies.

“That high press only exposes that.”
