Man Utd chief Ed Woodward rejected transfer deadline day proposal

Manchester United chief Ed Woodward rejected the chance to let new signing Facundo Pellistri stay on loan at his old club, Penarol, because he wanted the winger to join up with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-team squad immediately.

Pellistri became one of the surprise signings of the summer transfer window after securing a move to United on Monday.

The deal was announced late on deadline day, with the 18-year-old becoming one of five additions made by United in the space of 24 hours.

The Red Devils also secured deals for Edinson Cavani, Alex Telles, Amad Traore and Willy Kambwala on deadline day as Woodward acted quickly to improve the squad.

Woodward was accused of panic-buying after missing out on Solskjaer’s top transfer target, Jadon Sancho.

Pellistri joined for a fee believed to be in the region of £9million, representing one of the club’s cheapest buys of the summer.

Penarol were apparently desperate to keep the winger until January before letting him join United, but Woodward apparently refused that request point-blank.

Speaking this week, Penarol vice-chairman Rodolfo Cantino confirmed that he did everything to try and keep Pellistri for the first three months of the season.

However, Woodward wanted the teenager to jump straight into Solskjaer’s first-team side after a shambolic start to the season.

“Of course we asked for it,” Cantino said when asked if he tried to include a loan-back option.

“We tried in every way but they argued that they wanted the player now.

“It’s normal, when an European club buy a player, they travel immediately.

“Pellistri [will go] straight to the first team.

“He’s going to play. In the negotiation they asked me if I could guarantee them if he was in the bubble because they need him.

“Then it will be a matter of the manager if he uses him”.

Pellistri is set to join up with the United first-team side immediately, and could be involved when their Premier League season resumes next week.
