Man Utd chief Woodward wants transfer this week, Arsenal ready to pay fee, Liverpool exit

Wednesday, February 26

  • Manchester United have stepped up their interest in Aston Villa star Jack Grealish and want to complete a deal by the end of the week
  • Arsenal are ready to trigger the release clause of Getafe full-back Marc Cucurella
  • Liverpool could sell Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane and sign Timo Werner as a replacement

Liverpool make Timo Werner offer

Liverpool have taken a major step towards signing RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, according to reports. The Reds have apparently offered the 23-year-old a blockbuster five-year contract to move to Anfield.

Transfer expert Nicolo Schira claimed Liverpool have triggered Werner’s £49million (€58m) release clause.

Personal negotiations are underway and the German striker has been offered a five-year contract worth £6.7m-a-year (€8m).

Schira wrote: “Liverpool have offered to Timo Werner a contract until 2025 with a wages of €8M+ bonuses a year.

“Talks ongoing to finalise the deal. #transfers #LFC.

“Liverpool are in advanced talks for Timo #Werner. Reds are ready to pay the clause (€58M) to #Leipzig and close the deal until April (when clause expires). #transfers #LFC.”

Mohamed Salah to Real Madrid?

Liverpool could be in for a fight to keep hold of Mohamed Salah as Real Madrid are reportedly plotting a summer swoop for the forward. However, Los Blancos will first have to offload injury-prone attacker Gareth Bale, whose move to China fell through last year.

Bale’s enormous salary makes him a difficult prospect to sell.

Even tentative links to Manchester United and Tottenham would never materialise unless the Welshman takes a substantial pay cut.

If Real are able to offload the winger then president Florentio Perez is ready to move for Salah, according to Spanish outlet El Desmarque.

Ideally the La Liga giants would prefer to sign Paris Saint-Germain starlet Kylian Mbappe, who has two years remaining on his current contract.

However, they would struggle to meet the £252m (€300m) valuation so they have been made to look elsewhere.

And Perez sees Salah as the ideal alternative to become the latest Galactico.

Man Utd may only get £60m plus add-ons for Paul Pogba

Manchester United may only get £60m plus add-ons for Paul Pogba this summer, transfer expert Duncan Castles claims.

He said on the Transfer Window podcast: “There comes a point when they’ll say ‘We’re not going to get €160m for Pogba’.

“There are a limited number of clubs who can buy him. Real Madrid didn’t do it last summer because it was Zidane’s idea and Perez was against the idea.

“Juventus are interested but they have their own financial problems. PSG are the only other real candidate. If Inter find more capital maybe…

“So £60m with add-ons becomes realistic as a fee and something that might allow Raiola to go to those clubs and tempt them in.

“That would represent a major loss for United. It has been a mistake to bring him back to the club. In this case, Ed Woodward needs to realise you can’t make a profit on all of these deals.

“You can’t hang on forever in hope the player’s value will re-inflate to make the balance sheet look good.

“Take that money that’s been spent on Fernandes and move on with a player that wants to be at the club.”

Man Utd offered Emil Forsberg

Manchester United have been offered the chance to sign RB Leipzig’s wantaway attacker Emil Forsberg this summer.

However, head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may struggle to fit the Swedish international in his squad.

According to SportBild, Forsberg has grown frustrated with the limited opportunities he is being offered by Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann.

The 28-year-old, who plays predominantly as a left winger but can also slot in as an attacking midfielder, has been offered to several Premier League clubs.

A minimal fee of £17million (€20m) is all that would be required, which is short change to Premier League clubs.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to be given a transfer warchest this summer and he will be in the market for offensive players.

Odsonne Edouard wanted by three clubs

A trio of Premier League sides are weighing up a summer move for Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard. Manchester United, Newcastle and Everton are all reportedly keen on the Scottish Premiership top goalscorer.

Edouard has netted 21 times in the league this term – eight more than his closest challenger Jermaine Defoe.

Celtic have opened up a 12-point gap at the top of the table as they hunt a ninth straight title.

United are desperate for attacking reinforcements this summer after missing out on Erling Braut Haaland last month.

Everton and Newcastle will also be looking to bolster their ranks when the window reopens.

And 22-year-old Edouard, who signed for Celtic from Toulouse for £10million in 2018, could make the move south of the board, according to the Daily Record.

Man Utd made Erling Haaland offer

Manchester United reportedly tabled a £50million offer for Erling Braut Haaland in January – £33m more than the 19-year-old’s release clause. The Red Devils are said to have made such an offer to tempt the Austrian side to allow them exclusivity.

A host of Europe’s top clubs were tracking Haaland after he made a blistering start to the season, scoring 28 goals in 22 appearances.

However, the young Dutchman opted to join Borussia Dortmund, where he has continued his rich vein of form.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer flew out to meet the striker in a bid to tempt him to move to Old Trafford.

Salzburg sporting director Christoph Freund told SportBild United were “very interested” in completing a deal as Ed Woodward conducted negotiations.

He claimed Haaland would not have opted to move to Dortmund if he “made a financial decision” because of United’s proposal.

Woodward was hoping to offer such a substantial fee in an attempt to hold exclusive talks with the attacker.

Man Utd make Alexis Sanchez transfer decision

Manchester United winger Alexis Sanchez isn’t having a great loan spell at Inter Milan this season and the Italian club have set two conditions for possibly making the move a permanent one at the end of this campaign.

According to Italian publication CalcioMercato, only a dramatic increase in the player’s performance or a substantial reduction in United’s asking price, would see the Chilean swap Old Trafford for the San Siro in the summer.

Sanchez has only scored one goal and provided three assists in 13 appearances for the club in all competitions this season.

The 31-year-old was sidelined for over three months with an ankle injury and has only made one 90-minute performance for Inter this season.

Jadon Sancho U-turn

Jadon Sancho could remain a Borussia Dortmund player.

That’s according to German publication Ruhr Nachrichte, who suggest the talented winger is prepared to snub advances from his admirers.

The England international has been linked with Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool.

But the Premier League trio could be left disappointed with the £100million-rated star NOT guaranteed to push for a mega-money switch.

Man City exit hint

Manchester City star Bernardo Silva has revealed he wants to play in Spain before the end of his career.

When asked if he’d like a move to Spain, Silva told SER Catalonia: “Maybe.

“But the Premier League is a competition that when I was very young I watched it on television, and I had always been very excited about playing here.

“I love playing here; the atmosphere of the stadiums, the way all people live football.

“But, of course I would also like to play in Spain one day.”

Barcelona make Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang decision

Barcelona will not pursue Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this summer, says European football expert Gabriele Marcotti.

“The Barcelona thing, I wouldn’t worry about that too much,” Marcotti told ESPN FC.

“The last thing they need is another guy pushing 30 in the mix, I think that was more of something in January.

“But if he waits around until the summer, he’s got a year left on his contract, I think he will be attractive to a lot of teams.

“So I think that’s where Arsenal have got to worry.”

Ed Woodward talks Man Utd transfer plans

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has insisted the club will continue to buy “experienced, world-class players” this summer following heavy spending in the last two transfer windows.

“This season is one of rebuild, with many changes to the squad – in terms of players who have left or gone out on loan; new players who we have brought into the club; and academy graduates that we have brought through to the first team,” Woodward said.

“This process will continue as we implement our plan and our footballing vision under Ole and his coaching staff.

“Despite being linked in the media to 111 players in January, our acquisition of just one of them – Bruno Fernandes – is an important step in that direction, demonstrating our commitment to adding experienced, world-class recruits to the exciting crop of academy graduates that are at the heart of this developing team.

“We will take the same planned, disciplined, approach this coming summer.”

Arsenal to pay release clause

Arsenal are ready to trigger the release clause of Getafe full-back Marc Cucurella, it’s claimed.

The Gunners could be forced to sign a new left-sided player with Bukayo Saka refusing to commit to a new deal as of yet.

According to Spanish outlet COPE, Arsenal are just one of a number of clubs willing to pay the £21million (€25m) release clause of Cucurella.

That could leave the decision in the hands of the 21-year-old, who is on loan from Barcelona but that Getafe will sign for £5m (€6m) by exercising an option in his loan deal.

Man Utd set transfer deadline

Manchester United have stepped up their interest in Aston Villa star Jack Grealish and want to complete a deal by the end of the week in a similar move to Chelsea, who are also looking to do their business this month.

Frank Lampard moved quickly to complete the £37million deal for Ajax midfielder Hakim Ziyech last week.

And now United are looking to do likewise to avoid the situation which happened in the last two transfer windows.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils have made Grealish a top target and are ready to move for the 24-year-old this week.

It is thought Grealish would be open to moving to Manchester as he is often captured socialising in the city.

Liverpool to replace Salah or Mane with Werner?

Liverpool could sell Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane and sign Timo Werner as a replacement, transfer expert Duncan Castles claims. Castles also reckons the Reds will be desperate to keep hold of Roberto Firmino this summer.

He said on the Transfer Window podcast: “The difficulty is getting Firmino out of Liverpool. Liverpool have to look at a replacement strategy for Mo Salah and Sadio Mane, who both have ambitions to play in Spain at some point in their careers.

“They’re also coveted by the biggest Spanish clubs. Liverpool are very much in control in the situation in terms of the contracts.

“They can choose when to sell them and they can do so for a huge amount of money. They can also bring in replacements such as Timo Werner.

“You can see, with his pace and his physicality, he’s a fit for Klopp’s style of football. He’s a good alternative to Mane or Salah.

“You could argue Firmino is the hardest one to replace. That complex link, shadow nine role he plays.

“You have to get a more specific type of forward in there to replace him.

“If I was Firmino’s agent, I would be welcoming talks with Bayern Munich, asking how much they’re willing to pay.”
