Manchester United are continuing to hold talks over the potential appointment of Zinedine Zidane, it has been claimed. The Frenchman has been linked with a move to Old Trafford over the past few weeks. And with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer facing a fight to keep his job, the Glazers could be about to make a change.

United have made considerable progress under Solskjaer ever since he replaced Jose Mourinho back in December 2018.

The Red Devils have made a final under the Norwegian, in the Europa League last term, while also finishing second and third under him so far.

However, United’s progress has started to come undone this term with Solskjaer overseeing a chastening season so far.

The 48-year-old’s team have lost six of their last 12 matches across all competitions, losing ground in the Premier League title race and exiting the Carabao Cup in the process.

And with Solskjaer feeling the heat, the club have been linked with several managers to take over.

One is Zidane, who remains out of work following his decision to leave Real Madrid for a second time back in the summer.

And journalist Pedro Almedia, writing on his Instagram, has claimed United are continuing to hold talks with the 49-year-old over potentially taking over.

“Talks on between Zinedine #Zidane and Manchester United,” he said.

“Attention. The deal is difficult because the French coach’s preference right now is to coach a national team.”

With Zidane appearing to be holding out for the France job, United may be wasting their time with a pursuit.

But the Real icon would tick all the boxes, especially for the Glazers who would love to hire one of football’s biggest names.

Zidane was a novice when he first took the job at the Bernabeu in January 2016, replacing Rafa Benitez.

Yet he won three Champions League titles on the trot, as well as the La Liga title, before leaving in 2018.

Zidane did later return to the club following the departure of Santiago Solari in March 2019.

And he won the La Liga title in 2020 before walking away for a second time earlier in this year.

Zidane isn’t the only person being linked with the United job amid their dire form under Solskjaer, however.

Brendan Rodgers is one candidate, even if he appears to be happy in his current environment at Leicester City.

Mauricio Pochettino is another, despite his commitment to Paris Saint-Germain.

And Erik ten Hag has also been linked amid his impressive work at Ajax, where he’s won two Eredivisie titles during his stint in charge.

Zidane was recently urged to consider the United job by former France boss Raymond Domenech, who feels Cristiano Ronaldo could be a powerful bait when it comes to taking over.

“What job is he made for when he’s been a multiple Champions League winner with Real Madrid?” he said.

“What’s left? [Manchester] City, United, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich? There’s five or six clubs.

“After that, if he takes another club, they’re a step down for him, for someone of his level.

“There comes a point when you can’t let that possibility slip.

“He’s also got, with Ronaldo, a direct relay, a translator from Spanish to English.

“He’ll also get away from people who say he only achieved what he did because it was Real Madrid because he knew the players and he’ll prove he’s really a top manager.

“That’s why I tell him: go for it. Or stay in your comfort, but I don’t think that’s his desire.”
