Manchester United fans online are calling for teenage star Anthony Elanga to start ahead of the underperforming Marcus Rashford following Monday’s FA Cup win against Aston Villa.

United progressed to the fourth round courtesy of Scott McTominay’s early goal but England international Rashford’s display was criticised, with some supporters furiously questioning his desire.

Rashford was replaced by 19-year-old winger Elanga in the 85th minute and after some impressive passages of play, United fans on social media have called for the teenager to start ahead of Rashford for United’s next game – also against Villa, this time in the Premier League – on Saturday.

One fan said: ‘I hope Elanga gets more games for us this season – with the current form of Rashford I think he should be starting the next couple of games,’ while another similarly stated: ‘Elanga looks better than Rashford. I would start him over Rashford.’

A different supporter honed in more on Rashford’s body language, saying: ‘Elanga showed a great deal more in five minutes than Rashford has in a full run of games.

‘Don’t know what’s up with him, but he’s forgotten how to play football and his body language is ill.’

Lastly, two fans similarly called for Elanga to be given an opportunity from the start: ‘Elanga is better than Rashford currently. Rangnick better start him in our next game’, and ‘Elanga should be ahead of Rashford for the next game after that.

‘Something’s not right with him.’

Rashford was taken off by manager Ralf Rangnick in the 85th minute for the 19-year-old

Elanga signed a new contract at Old Trafford last month until the summer of 2026 – he scored on his second Premier League start against Wolves on the final day of last season.

After penning his new deal, Elanga told the club’s official website: ‘My ultimate ambition has always been to play for Manchester United. The standard is extremely high, but this contract is another important moment in my journey.

‘I know that with hard-work and dedication comes opportunity at this special club and I cannot wait to continue my progress here.’

He has made five appearances so far this season and is yet to find the back of the net, while Rashford has netted just three times in 15 games in all competitions.
