Manchester United could be forced to turn their attentions elsewhere if they miss out on landing Declan Rice from West Ham. The Red Devils have apparently fallen behind Liverpool and Chelsea in the race to sign the influential England midfielder.

Speculation surrounding Rice’s future has been rife all season and the player has been linked with a move to a string of rival clubs.

United appeared to be frontrunners to sign the ace as they continue their search for someone who can protect their back four and help fix their defensive frailties.

But they could now be set to miss out on the player.

And Express Sport takes a look at four transfer alternatives United could target.

Ruben Neves

The Red Devils are long-time admirers of Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves.

The 24-year-old is one of Wolves’ most important players and has been key to the club’s success since he moved to the Black Country in 2017.

Neves played 42 league games during his debut season for Wolves as the side stormed to the Championship title in the 2017/18 season.

And he has gone on to make 127 Premier League appearances over the last three-and-a-half campaigns.

The Portugal international, who has 26 caps to his name, could be a judicious signing for United as he is proven in the Premier League and could hit the ground running.

Boubacar Kamara

Boubacar Kamara has been tipped to depart Marseille this month – and the Red Devils are now reportedly the favourites to sign the 22-year-old.

The talented France under-21 international, who can play at centre-back or as a defensive midfielder, made his Ligue 1 debut in 2017 and has become a regular for his team.

But he is out of contract in the summer and Ralf Rangnick’s side could attempt to prise him away from France early.

Kamara has Europa League and Champions League experience and could well jump at the chance to join one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Fabian Ruiz

Fabian Ruiz has been in impressive form for Napoli since arriving at the club from Real Betis in 2018.

The midfielder is known for his versatility and has excellent vision and an exquisite range of passing.

So he could certainly be someone who could turn defence into attack while he is looking after the United backline.

The 25-year-old, who has 15 caps for Spain, is out of contract in the summer of 2023 and has refused to put pen-to-paper on a new deal. So he could be available for the right price.

Aurelien Tchouameni

Another talented youngster making a name for himself in France is 21-year-old Aurelien Tchouameni.

The Monaco midfielder has been tipped to move on to bigger and better things and has been linked with Chelsea recently.

Tchouameni already has 74 games under his belt for Monaco and appeared 37 times for Bordeaux after first becoming a professional.

The youngster made his France debut in September and has appeared in all six of his country’s matches since.

And if United were to sign Tchouameni this month, they would be getting a player who has plenty of football ahead of him and who could become a Premier League star for years to come.
