Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has been charged with “assault and coercive control” of ex-girlfriend Kate Greville.

The 47-year-old, who made nearly 1,000 appearances for the Red Devils in 24 seasons, was arrested on suspicion of assault in November.

He was today charged at Salford Magistrates’ Court with “causing actual bodily harm” to his ex-girlfriend.

Giggs was also charged with a second count of assault against another woman in her 20s following a brawl in 2020.

A Crown Prosecution Service spokesperson said: “We have authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge Ryan Giggs with engaging in behaviour which was controlling or coercive and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

“A charge of assault by beating relating to a second woman has also been authorised.

“The CPS made the decision to charge Mr Giggs after reviewing a file of evidence from Greater Manchester Police.

“Criminal proceedings are active and nothing should be published that could jeopardise the defendant’s right to a fair trial.”

Giggs was arrested at his £1.7m Worsley property amid reports of a “disturbance”, having alleged been at the Hotel Football, Greater Manchester, earlier the same day to watch his former side’s loss to Arsenal.

The United legend is then said to have travelled to the Stock Exchange Hotel, where he is a co-owner, before returning to the property.

A statement from Giggs’ representatives at the time of arrest said: “Mr Giggs denies all allegations of assault made against him. He is cooperating with the police and will continue to assist them with their ongoing investigations."
