Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand suggests new position for Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Manchester United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka has received a plethora of plaudits for his instant impact in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s back line and club legend Rio Ferdinand believes the 22-year-old could comfortably play in another position.

Wan-Bissaka moved to Old Trafford from Crystal Palace in a £50million deal last summer.

He has gone on to make 34 appearances across all competitions as United racked up an 11-game unbeaten run prior to the enforced coronavirus break.

And Ferdinand thinks the full-back could easily slot into a back three should Solskjaer feel the need to mix up his tactics.

“He can cover people, unbelievable. He could play the right side of a back three at Man United if they wanted to, I think he’d be brilliant there,” Ferdinand said during an Instagram Q&A.

“It depends on the game, If I knew I was going to have to defend a lot and I need someone to lock down the winger I’m bringing AWB on.”

A big debate has been sparked this season as to who is the better full-back out of Wan-Bissaka and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Both men are vying to make the England No 2 shirt their own but it is Alexander-Arnold who currently holds down the position.

Jurgen Klopp’s local lad has a remarkably good delivery and passing accuracy but he can occasionally be found wanting when running towards his own goal.

In contrast, Wan Bissaka does not register many goals or assists but he is rarely beaten by opposition wingers.

“If you moulded them two players together, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Trent Alexander-Arnold, you’ve got the best player,” Ferdinand added.

“Aaron Wan-Bissaka one-versus-one, I’ve seen [Raheem] Sterling play against him and Sterling rinses everybody, he finds it hard against Wan-Bissaka.

“One-versus-one he will match you physically, he will run with you, he will slide on the floor if you’re getting away from him a little bit more and he has to go into overdrive.

“On the ball nowhere near as good as Trent, but Trent defensively one-on-one isn’t anywhere near as good as Wan-Bissaka, so if you had both of them you’ve got the ultimate machine.”

Meanwhile, Solskjaer has also recently highlighted the need for Wan-Bissaka to work on his offensive play.

He said: “When you play at Man United as a full back you do have to provide assists. That’s just part and parcel of being here, so he’s getting more and more of them.

“We always knew that he was going to be hard to beat. He’s one of the best one v one defenders I’ve ever seen, but he used to be a winger when he was younger, so he’s got it in him.”
