Man Utd ‘make contact’ with Thiago Alcantara in bid to hijack Liverpool efforts

Manchester United have reportedly made contact with Thiago Alcantara's representatives over a proposed move for the Bayern Munich star.

The Spaniard has been linked with United’s bitter rivals Liverpool for most of the summer but the Reds have stalled in their efforts.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have so far refused to meet Bayern’s relatively low £27million asking price for the midfielder, who only has one year left on his contract.

And, according to German publication Bild, the Red Devils could try and hijack Liverpool’s efforts to sign Thiago.

The report claims that United have contacted the former Barcelona star’s advisors about a possible move, but say that a bid has not yet been made.

The 29-year-old informed the Bundesliga giants before the end of last season that he would not be renewing his deal at the Allianz Arena.

While Thiago is thought to be keen on a move to Anfield, he could also possibly be swayed into joining the project at Old Trafford.

Liverpool would like to sign Thiago but know they must sell before thinking about signing him.

Recent reports suggest that Reds midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has agreed a deal to join Barcelona, which would free up some funds for other players.

The Dutchman himself is entering the final year of his contract and a transfer of between £13m and £18m has been reported.

Spanish publication Diario Sport claims the midfielder has agreed a three-year deal, with new Barca boss Ronald Koeman keen on the move.

Koeman and Wijnaldum know each other well through working together with the Holland national team.

Meanwhile, United could confirm the signing of Donny van de Beek today after agreeing a £40m move.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to get the deal over the line before Friday so the midfielder does not have to undertake a 14 day quarantine on arrival in the UK.
