Manchester United would have more money to spend on summer signings if Dean Henderson can prove he can be the club’s long-term No 1, claims transfer expert Duncan Castles. Henderson has made just three Premier League starts for United since his return from his loan spell at Sheffield United. The 23-year-old revealed his desire to be No 1 for club and country after signing a new long-term contract at Old Trafford last year.

Henderson has since been linked with a move away from United, with Tottenham reportedly interested in signing the England international.

Castles reported this week that the Red Devils are in the market for a new goalkeeper.

However, David de Gea’s absence for the next few matches following the birth of his first child will give Henderson an opportunity to prove himself to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Castles claims Solskjaer wants to bring in a central defender and possibly a striker in the summer window.

And not having to sign a top goalkeeper, due to Henderson proving he is good enough, would allow more funds to go into those positions.

Castles said on the Transfer Window podcast: “Henderson will have that chance to prove whether he’s as good as he thinks he is and to convince United that if they’re going to change De Gea, don’t go and sign a goalkeeper from elsewhere, but give the shirt to me and use some of the money you save on salary for that top goalkeeper in other areas of the team where you want to recruit.

“They want to recruit a centre-back, they maybe have to recruit a striker because retaining Edinson Cavani for a second season is going to be very expensive for them, and there are other areas which they would like to add and which Solskjaer would like to strengthen the team to move further towards that cultural reboot and have a chance of winning the Premier League.”

De Gea has returned to Spain and will be given time by United to spend with his girlfriend Edurne Garcia and baby girl Yanay.

Solskjaer has defended the decision and says Henderson is ready to step into his shoes.

“It’s a fantastic day for David,” Solskjaer said.

“Of course when you become a dad that’s probably the best possible feeling you can have. The ones who have been lucky enough to have that feeling know exactly what David is going through now.

“I’ll give him the time he needs before he comes back. He has to go home and in the old world that’s a day, you come back and you’re ready again.

“Now with the pandemic and quarantines of course it’s a different world, but still we felt when David wanted to go and be there to support his girlfriend of course there’s not even a decision to make.

“Dean came in and played well and he’s ready, so I’ll give David the time he needs of course.”
