Man Utd star Edinson Cavani compared to Old Trafford hero after debut vs Chelsea

Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has been praised for his movement in his debut against Chelsea, with United hero Ryan Giggs comparing him to Robin van Persie.

Cavani had an impressive cameo on Saturday as he came on as a late substitute in United’s goalless draw with Chelsea.

The 33-year-old, who signed a one-year contract on transfer deadline day, was forced to wait for his first appearance for the club after being forced to self-isolate.

He came on as Untied’s sole striker, with Marcus Rashford moving out to the left-wing, and was immediately lined up against his former team-mate Thiago Silva.

Cavani nearly made a dream start to life at United, as his first touch clipped the side netting just shy of the post.

The striker waited at the front post for a cross from Bruno Fernandes, and flicked the ball with the otuside of his right foot.

He had waited at the front of the group of players inside the area and tried to make a darting run to the front post before Fernandes passed back to Luke Shaw.

Cavani then re-positioned himself and made the run again, only to be denied by the side netting.

Having signed on a free, the Uruguayan is set to provide competition for Anthony Martial and offer something different to the pacy Frenchman.

And Michael Owen was full of praise for the veteran after the game, and claimed more often than not his first touch would have gone inside the post.

He told Premier League Productions: “I love this guy’s movement, he’s my type of striker.

“I’ve always said half a yard at the near post is better than two or three yards at the back post, because invariably the ball doesn’t get there, and if it does the defenders can turn and close you down.

“Just before [his shot], he made the same run, came back out, and made the same run again. The timing of his runs, he’s on his toes and just waits.

“Thiago [Silva] played alongside him last season for Paris Saint-Germain, so he’ll know exactly how he does it and when. It was great defending.

“Normally, against most defenders, he might have got there and got a nick and they wouldn’t have blocked him.

“We only saw a brief cameo, but I’ve watched him for years and I’ve always said he’s one of the best movers in terms of those little darting runs.

“I think he’s going to score a few. As long as Man Utd have pressure on the opponents and they get crosses in. He’s very much an 18-yard box type of striker who makes darting runs.”

United hero Giggs echoed Owen’s comments, and compared him to Old Trafford icon Van Persie, while explaining that because of his impressive movement, United’s midfielders will have to get used to playing passes while he’s still onside.

“I think they’re going to have to watch his movement,” he warned.

“When Robin van Persie came to the club, we weren’t finding him quickly enough because his movement was so good.

“Early, he had to play the ball quickly, and I think Cavani is in that bracket.

“His movement is good, you have to play the ball quickly otherwise he’ll be offside.

“But we’ve seen there a little glimpse of the quality he can provide.”
