Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has fired a warning to Manchester City ahead of Saturday’s crunch Manchester derby – insisting that he and the rest of the United squad are champing at the bit to make history at Old Trafford.

Although always a fiercely contested derby, Saturday’s meeting has scope to be the most important in recent memory, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s job reportedly still hanging in the balance.

After a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool in October, the United boss was given a three-game reprieve.

But United failed to build on last weekend’s 3-0 win at Tottenham and could only salvage a last-gasp 2-2 draw against Atalanta in the Champions League in midweek.

Cavani is expected to start the game alongside Cristiano Ronaldo after the duo both found the net against Spurs – and he’s issued a rallying cry ahead of a vital fixture for both the club and Solskjaer.

“I understand perfectly well what these games mean and how significant a derby is for a club and its fan-base,” said the United striker ahead of the game.

“There are some games that are really special, because of all the history behind them and the rivalry that exists with the other club.

“They are the kind of games everyone, including me at least, wants to be involved in, because they are very special occasions – games that remain part of history and stay in everyone’s memory.

“I have one or two memories of other derbies I’ve played in, such as Paris St Germain and Marseille, where I’ve been fortunate enough to get on the scoresheet.

“You can feel the joy you experience and the passion you feel the moment you score.

“I’ve played in Napoli and Juventus games which unfortunately isn’t considered a true Clásico, but it’s an opponent in a game that, over the years, has announced itself as almost a derby game.”

Cavani revealed that United fans have let him know in the past just how pivotal the clash with City, whilst also revealing that the rivalry with Liverpool had also been stressed to him.

“In Manchester last season, you’d see the odd fan who’d let you know that the derby game was coming up,” he continued.

“They’ve also spoken to me about how much the Liverpool game means to them, too.

“It’s also one of those games that’s talked about an awful lot and where you can feel just exactly what it means.

“The derby shares that same feeling, a special game that the fans really want to win.”
