Man Utd star Raphael Varane’s stance on joining Ronaldo and co in Saudi Arabia

Manchester United star Raphael Varane reportedly has no plans to move to Saudi Arabia despite links with Al-Ittihad. It was recently claimed that former France international Karim Benzema planned to convince Varane to join the swathe of stars moving to the Saudi Pro League.

Reports suggested that Benzema wanted to persuade Varane to join Al-Ittihad. The reigning Saudi champions would need to offload a foreign star as their squad already meets the maximum of eight.

However, it has now been reported that Varane has no intention to sign for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side. Had he made the move, he would have joined Benzema, N’Golo Kante and Fabinho in arriving at the club this summer.

The former Real Madrid defender is reportedly ‘content’ at Old Trafford and does not want to join former Real Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo and co. in Saudi Arabia. He has been a rare highlight during the below-par start to United’s reign.

According to French journalist Julien Laurens, Varane has no plans to move to Saudi Arabia and has not been contacted by any of the clubs from the Middle East country. The 30-year-old still has two years remaining on his contract.

Varane scored United’s first goal of the season in a narrow 1-0 win over Wolves last week. But he was unable to prevent Ten Hag’s side losing 2-0 at Tottenham on Saturday.

The United head coach will be keen to keep his best players at Old Trafford. It is also clear that he needs more signings, with his midfield of particular concern due to the underwhelming performances of Casemiro.

United have signed four senior players this summer. Mason Mount, Andre Onana, Rasmus Hojlund and Jonny Evans have all been added to Ten Hag’s squad.

Ten Hag felt that United’s misfiring display against Spurs, in which several missed chances were spurned, evidenced why Hojlund has been signed. The bustling Norwegian forward is yet to make his debut after arriving from Atalanta with an injury.

“We believe these players, last year as well, can score goals. It’s also obvious why we signed a striker,” Ten Hag said.

“If all goes well, [Anthony] Martial is on the way back, Hojlund also is coming, so we will have more players to score a goal. The players on the pitch can also score goals.”
