Man Utd transfer collapse punished with Ten Hag at risk of missing out on trio

Man Utd: Greenwood to leave after two parties reach agreement

Manchester United may rue not sealing a deal for Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard, as they risk not being able to bring in three of their backup transfer targets this summer. The Red Devils had been looking at Pavard as a replacement for Harry Maguire, but the former captain’s West Ham transfer collapsed at an advanced stage.

United were left wary of moving for the France international, owing to financial concerns as a result of their ongoing takeover process and Financial Fair Play. That left the door open for Inter Milan to join the race, taking advantage of United’s hesitancy as they are set to confirm a £27million deal for the 27-year-old versatile defender.

United have identified three other defenders after missing out on Pavard, as Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Edmond Tapsoba, Marc Guehi and Jean-Clair Todibo are all admired by the club’s hierarchy.

However, United are not close to signing either centre-back following Maguire’s collapsed move to West Ham. It is thought that should the ex-skipper remain at Old Trafford, then there is no need for another defender acquisition especially as neither of the trio are as versatile as Pavard – who was adept at playing at right-back.

Following the decision not to sell Maguire to West Ham after being in advanced discussions, United may now miss out on four players though it remains to be seen whether the call was made by the club or player – as the England man is happy to stay and fight for his place at Old Trafford.

An opportunity may arise if Raphael Varane completes a move to join the exodus to Saudi Arabia, as Al Ittihad had been linked with a move for the Frenchman. However, ESPN have since claimed that no club has contacted the 30-year-old and he wants to stay at United, a view shared by Ten Hag after starting both games to begin the season.

All three of United’s new targets in Tapsoba, Todibo and Guehi would all likely cost in the £40m range, a figure United are unlikely to be able to pay without further outgoings. A new goalkeeper and midfielder are the current targets, but sales are also needed for ideal signings Odysseas Vlachodimos and Sofyan Amrabat already.

Maguire would likely have to fetch a fee similar to the £30m deal proposed by West Ham, though it looks unlikely that a move could be resurrected as the Hammers are on the verge of signing former Arsenal centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos in a £21m move from Stuttgart.

He was spotted at their win over Chelsea on Sunday – leaving United without a plan to be able to recruit any of their three defensive targets.
