Cristiano Ronaldo greeted Antony’s debut goal for Manchester United with a wide-stretched grin and a round of applause.

The Portuguese ace has had to acquaint himself with the United substitutes’ bench ever since Erik ten Hag took up the reins at Old Trafford. Ronaldo has not been named in the starting eleven since the Red Devils’ horrific 4-0 away defeat to Brentford.

As has been the case for the last three matches, Ronaldo was out of Ten Hag’s first eleven for United's 3-1 victory over Arsenal. The Dutchman deployed Marcus Rashford through the middle, with Jadon Sancho and £82million man Antony flanking the United academy ace. And Ronaldo had one of the best seats in Old Trafford when Antony slotted home a debut goal for the Reds.

The Brazilian latched onto a clever pass from Rashford and clinically dispatched his effort into the bottom corner. It was a cool, calm, and ruthless finish which may very well be a sign of things to come.

Antony’s blistering start to life at Old Trafford will only push Ronaldo down the United pecking order even further. If the Brazilian ace's arrival was not difficult enough, Rashford appears to have finally rediscovered his best form, securing the points for United with two goals in ten minutes in the second half.

Many were expecting Ronaldo to depart United in the recent summer transfer window. However, Ten Hag and the United board decided to retain his services, whether the 37-year-old liked it or not.

While Ronaldo has only started one Premier League match, Ten Hag has introduced the iconic No.7 from the bench in every match so far. And the Dutchman hinted that may be Ronaldo’s role throughout the season.

"As we said that," Ten Hag said when asked about Ronaldo staying at the club "It's really early in the season and we have a squad.

“We have more than 11 starting players, that is what you see now, players now on the bench can play in one, two or three weeks."
