Manchester United are sure to be linked with Matthijs de Ligt following comments made by Mino Raiola, the player’s agent. It’s been suggested the Netherlands international could leave Juventus at the end of the campaign after three years in Italy. So, with that being the case, it’s time to look at the Red Devils’ strange snub involving the player.
Manchester United were linked with De Ligt in the summer of 2019.
The Dutchman had flourished for Ajax, helping them reach the Champions League semi-finals with some commanding displays at the back.
But while United were interested in snapping him up, they ultimately missed out to Serie A giants Juventus instead.
De Ligt has, so far, fared well for the Italian titans. But Raiola, rather mischievously, has now suggested he may leave at the end of the campaign.
“I think he and De Ligt are among the best defenders in Europe. De Ligt has a contract, while Romagnoli’s deal expires next year,” he said.

“I think they could play together at Juventus next season, but pay attention because De Ligt could leave Juve at the end of the season.
“That’s how the market works, there are many clubs interested in signing him.”
United, inevitably, will be linked.
But they famously rejected the chance to sign the Dutchman back in 2018, before his European heroics for Ajax.
It was reported by the Mirror two years ago that United scout Marcel Bout, who was brought in by Louis van Gaal, advised United to push ahead with a deal.

But the Red Devils decided not to because they believed his father was overweight – and feared the player going down the same road.
The publication said: “Bout told United that De Ligt’s father, Frank, was significantly overweight and predicted the 19-year-old Holland international would go the same way as he got older and lose his pace and power.”
And De Ligt later addressed the claims, saying: “Suddenly even my father was too fat, and that’s why one of the club’s didn’t want me because they apparently though I’d have the same tendency.
“Every day there was something new.
“It just makes you go ‘come on, man’.”
United could have done with De Ligt two years ago but, after missing out, spent big on Harry Maguire instead.
And they’ve also since added Raphael Varane to their star-studded squad, with the Frenchman arriving from Real Madrid.
Regarding De Ligt, it’ll be curious to see what happens there.
And Raiola also decided to talk about Paul Pogba, too, admitting the United star’s future was yet to be decided.
“Pogba’s contract expires next year. We will talk to Manchester (United) and see,” he said.
“For sure Turin has remained in his heart and he cares a lot about these things.
“The possibility of returning to Juventus is there but it also depends on Juve.”
United have had a mixed record with Dutch players over the years.
Robin van Persie, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Edwin van der Sar were all undoubted hits.
But Donny van de Beek has toiled so far, while Daley Blind never lived up to expectations.
