Manchester United fans have joked that Frenkie de Jong will be playing at Old Trafford following their Europa League draw.

Barcelona midfielder de Jong was heavily linked with United in the summer transfer window but a deal didn’t end up happening.

However, the Dutchman will now be taking on United in the Europa League play-off round.

On Monday United were drawn against Barcelona in the Europa League play-off round 

One United fan commented that De Jong is ‘finally coming to Manchester’.

Another supporter stated that it is time to get ‘revenge’ on de Jong.

They wrote: ‘It was destined for this wasn’t it! Revenge against De Jong come on.’

One Twitter user commented on de Jong’s reluctance to play in the Europa League being a factor behind him not joining United. 

They wrote: ‘Frenkie de Jong in summer: You won’t see me playing Europa League football at Old Trafford this season. Nope. No thanks.’

One user stated that the game resembles a Champions League tie, rather than a Europa League matchup.

They wrote: ‘The Barcelona Vs Man United draw doesn’t look Europa. It looks like a champions league stuff. How time flies’.

De Jong was heavily linked with a move to United but a deal didn’t end up happening

Another suggested that the game is the perfect chance for United star Cristiano Ronaldo to provide a reminder of his quality.

They wrote: ‘Cristiano Ronaldo to show Barcelona he still remains the GOAT one more time, I’ve prayed for time like this.’ 

 Another wrote that the draw is ‘the least shocking thing ever’.
