Manchester United are close to finalising a move for Porto left-back Alex Telles, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer prepares to add two new signings to his squad before Monday’s deadline.
United are understood to have made a breakthrough in talks and are at an advanced stage of negotiations for the 27-year-old, whose contract at the Primeira Liga club was set to expire next summer.
Telles is expected to be joined at Old Trafford by Edinson Cavani. The 33-year-old striker, available as a free agent, landed in Manchester on Sunday afternoon ahead of his medical.
The signing of Telles will provide Luke Shaw with competition at left-back and offer an alternative to the naturally right-footed Brandon Williams.
United’s late flurry of activity in the window follows the £35m signing of Donny van de Beek from Ajax last month, which remains their only completed signing of the window to date.
United are yet to give up hope of securing their priority transfer target Jadon Sancho before Monday’s deadline but Borussia Dortmund insist the 20-year-old will not be allowed to leave.
Sancho did not feature in Dortmund’s 4-0 Bundesliga victory over Freiburg on Saturday after sitting out the week’s training due to illness, though the club have not changed their stance on the mid-August deadline that they imposed on any summer transfer.
