Mandzukic set to join Celta Vigo after turning down Villa and West Ham

Former Juventus star Mario Mandzukic – who has been a free agent for SIX MONTHS – ‘is set to join Spanish strugglers Celta Vigo’ after turning down offers from Aston Villa and West Ham following Qatar departure

  • Striker Mario Mandzukic has been available as a free agent since the summer
  • Not bound by the transfer window he looks on the brink of a move to Celta Vigo
  • Reports suggest 34-year-old has already turned down Premier League moves

Mario Mandzukic is set to end six months in exile by joining Celta Vigo on a free transfer – having reportedly spurned the opportunity to move to Aston Villa and West Ham.

The 34-year-old has been out of contract since leaving Qatari club Al-Duhail earlier in the year and can still be signed as a free agent which enables him to join any side outside of the transfer window.

Reports suggested Aston Villa and West Ham were keen to offer the Croatian a late career dabble in the Premier League but according to Di Marzio he turned down offers from both.

Now it appears Celta Vigo have won the race to land the former Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and Juventus striker having fended off competition from Benevento and Fiorentina who were prepared to offer him a Serie A return.

Spanish reports claim Celta are in advanced stages of negotiations with Mandzukic who has shown a positive attitude to the club despite their struggles in La Liga this term.

They have won just one of their nine league games and are one point and one place above the bottom three.

Mandzukic’s pending arrival would be a big boost to an attack that has scored just six times this season – the fewest in the division.

The deal for the former Croatia international is unlikely to hit any stumbling blocks despite the recent sacking of Celta manager Oscar Garcia, with Eduardo Coudet in line to replace him.
