Martin Keown questions Ralf Rangnick’s future at Man United, accusing the interim boss of ‘not towing the company line’… with Rio Ferdinand claiming the German is trying to ‘alleviate himself’ from blame for the Red Devils’ struggles
- Ralf Rangnick was appointed interim boss at Man United in late November
- The side’s results have not improved on the pitch in the period since he arrived
- He also did not seem to have much of a say in Erik ten Hag replacing him
- Martin Keown has hinted Rangnick may not have a future role at United
- Rio Ferdinand thinks Rangnick is starting to shift the blame for United’s issues
Martin Keown has questioned the impact that Ralf Rangnick has had since he arrived at Manchester United.
Having been handed the manager’s job on an interim basis in November, Rangnick has struggled to turn the team’s fortunes around on the pitch, and appears to have a strained relationship with technical director Darren Fletcher as he is unhappy with the former United midfielder giving instructions to players from the bench.
With Erik ten Hag taking over from Rangnick this summer, Keown is unsure where the German fits into United’s future plans as a consultant, after seemingly playing a minimal role in the appointment of his successor in the dugout.

‘Recruitment has to be linked to the new manager,’ Keown told BT Sport.
‘You look at Rangnick in all of this, I don’t think he has been part of that job offer. He’s not even spoken to him [ten Hag].
‘Rangnick has copped out a little bit. He’s not towed the company line. Some of things I’m hearing him say about Darren Fletcher, what’s he even doing at the club?
‘There doesn’t seem to be that sort of continuity that I’d expect. So how do you do that overnight with a new manager walking through the door?’

Rio Ferdinand has suggested Rangnick is not taking responsibility for United’s problems
Meanwhile, former United defender Rio Ferdinand offered some praise to Rangnick for being brutally honest about his side’s current issues. Rangnick claimed earlier this week that the Red Devils may need to make as many as 10 signings this summer to significantly improve their squad.
Yet Ferdinand was also concerned that the 63-year-old may be trying to shift the blame after an underwhelming tenure.
Ferdinand added: ‘He’s played his role. On one hand he’s been honest which has been refreshing to see.
‘But on the same point, it’s got to the point, is he alleviating himself from having his fingerprints over such a period where the number of wins that you’d expect for them to get has not materialised?’
