Mason Greenwood has been charged with attempted rape, coercive control and assault causing actual bodily harm.

The 21-year-old footballer was arrested over an alleged incident in January and has not appeared for Manchester United since. The England forward spent three nights in custody after police swooped on his home in Bowdon, Greater Manchester at the beginning of the year.

Now it has been confirmed Greenwood will appear at Greater Manchester Magistrates' Court on Monday, October 17, with the Crown Prosecution Service announcing the charges just hours after the striker was arrested on suspicion of breaching his bail.

Janet Potter, the Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West, said: “The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge Mason Greenwood, 21, with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

"All three counts relate to the same complainant.

“Specialist rape prosecutors from CPS North West’s complex casework unit authorised the charges following a review of a file of evidence received from Greater Manchester Police."

Ms Potter added: "The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and that he has a right to a fair trial.

"It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice those proceedings."

A GMP spokesman said earlier today: "Greater Manchester Police are aware of an allegation regarding a 21-year-old man breaching his bail conditions and an arrest has been made on Saturday 15 October 2022. Enquiries are ongoing at this time."

Greenwood, who made a single appearance for England in 2020, remains suspended by his club but still receives his salary of £75,000-a-week.

Greenwood has made 129 appearances for the club and scored 35 goals since his first-team debut against PSG in the Champions League in 2019.

Following his arrest, he was dropped by sponsors Nike and removed from FIFA 22.
