Former Tottenham striker Darren Bent has slammed Jose Mourinho, suggesting their display in the Premier League opener showed that it is not all rosy behind the scenes.

Spurs were beaten 1-0 by Everton as Mourinho kicked off his first full season in the dugout with a drab defeat.

Mourinho took aim at a number of his players following the loss, claiming they lacked the fitness levels required.

“I didn’t like my team,” the Portuguese manager said. “In the second half after their goal we were poor and in my opinion we were not physically strong, no intensity. The team lacks in this moment many players’ physical condition.

“The struggle started in the way we pressed – or I would say in the way we didn’t press because our pressure up front was very, very poor. I would say it was lazy pressure and when you have lazy pressure you don’t press and you let opponents build from the back. When you let almost any team in the Premier League play from the back, they are comfortable to have the ball.

“Lazy pressure up front, that creates an unbalanced situation for the rest of the team. It disappoints me and that is where I now have to work.”

But the ex-Spurs star criticised Mourinho's post-match comments, claiming the faults were down to him as manager.

“I think Mourinho is under pressure,” Bent told talkSPORT.

“I mean whose fault is it when he says ‘there was no intensity and the players lacked physical conditioning’?

“Surely he has to take the blame for that. That is his job. Everybody is in the same boat unfortunately, because nobody has had a pre-season.

“But to me, you look at Everton’s performance and Tottenham’s performance – I would say Everton fancied it and Spurs didn’t.”

Mourinho's man-management has been praised after Amazon's All or Nothing documentary showed a united camp under his stewardship.

However, Bent questioned whether the show has actually given an accurate representation on the feelings of squad.

He added: “What I saw in the documentary, it looks all positive, the relationship between Mourinho and the players and they are all pulling in the same direction. But that performance yesterday shows me that maybe, what they’re showing in this documentary doesn’t line up.

“For me the only bit of the documentary that seemed genuine was probably the Danny Rose conversation, where he went into the office and blew up about not playing.

“That’s the thing about documentaries, they can portray a situation in a way that potentially it’s not. And after seeing that performance yesterday, I’d say they’re a long way off where they want to be.”
