Chelsea can benefit from Conor Gallagher remaining at Crystal Palace for the remainder of the season, Eagles boss Patrick Vieira has insisted. The midfielder has been sensational for the South Londoners during his temporary stay this term.

Gallagher has scored six goals and provided three assists and he produced a fantastic brace against Everton on Sunday.

This is the 21-year-old’s fourth loan spell away from Chelsea but he still harbours ambitions of playing for the Blues’ first team.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel currently has a midfield crisis, with several players absent due to illness and injury. There had been a suggestion that Gallagher might be recalled.

However, it is understood that the England international has a clause inserted into his loan which prevents the Premier League title hopefuls from asking him to return to Stamford Bridge if he plays in at least 50 per cent of matches for Palace.

Gallagher has featured in 15 of Palace’s 16 matches – only missing the opening day clash with Chelsea due to being ineligible.

Now, Palace boss Vieira believes it is in Chelsea’s best interests for one of their top talents to play regular Premier League football.

“I think at his age what is important is to play week in, week out,” Vieira said on Friday.

“You are making a career not just based on your talents, but you are making a career based on the decisions you are making.

“I believe there were so many clubs around him and he made the right decision because he is playing, he is playing well and I think he is surrounded by people in this football club who look after him really well, that give him the confidence to express himself.

“I think it is a win-win. It is good for us to have a player like that because he is a talented young player and on the other side, he made the right decision coming to us because we are delivering everything that he was hoping.

“Now what is important is to maintain those performances he is having to allow him to go to a different level.”

Vieira was asked to compare Gallagher to two players from his playing days.

The 45-year-old Arsenal icon name-checked former Gunners star Ray Parlour and the Chelsea legend Frank Lampard.

Gallagher has earned a reputation for arriving in the penalty box to score with first-time finishes, just like Lampard.

“Conor has this passion for the game when he is on the field like a Ray Parlour, but I would say he has maybe the quality finishing of a Frank Lampard,” he added.

“It is a manager’s dream to have a player like Conor because when he is on the field, he will give everything.

“He is focused, concentrated and will always give his best. This is something that for me is really important.”
