Paul Gascoigne insists he was better than Phil Foden – even when drunk

Paul Gascoigne has responded to comparisons between himself and Manchester City star Phil Foden, declaring: "I can beat everyone with my eyes shut, and that’s with a bottle of whiskey inside of us as well."

As an attacking midfielder, Foden's playing style has sparked comparisons to Gazza and things went one step further when he dyed his hair blond ahead of Euro 2020, just as Gascoigne did for Euro 96.

However, when asked about the comparisons to Foden by former England goalkeeper David Seaman on his Seaman Says podcast, Gascoigne replied: "No one compares to me.

"I can beat everyone with my eyes shut, and that’s with a bottle of whiskey inside of us as well and a couple of Bacardi breezers."

Gascoigne has previously praised Foden, telling the Mirror: "I love to watch him play – we have so many exciting youngsters coming through.

"If Phil Foden scores, he should do the Dentist’s chair – and I will pour the cocktail down his throat.

"I think that goal was my greatest in an England shirt, and the celebration made it the greatest moment. So tell Phil Foden I will take him on one on one in my back garden."

Foden, meanwhile, has said of the comparisons: "I remember watching highlights on the TV of Gazza – an unbelievable player.

"The full nation know what he did, so it won’t be too bad if I try to bring a bit of Gazza on to the pitch."

Foden's team-mate at both club and international level, Raheem Sterling, has also suggested the youngster's new look was inspired by Sergio Aguero, who departed City at the end of the season.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live’s Daily Euros podcast Sterling said of Foden's new hairstyle: "I love it. You know why I love it? I love it because it says to me he’s confident.

"It says to me he doesn’t really give two whatevers what anyone thinks. Good on him. Brilliant from him.

"He said to me before the last training session that he liked Sergio’s (Aguero) hair, the silver one. I said, ‘yeah, it was nice wasn’t it?’…not knowing he was going to get it two days later!

"When I seen him, I was in shock to be honest. But I love stuff like that.

"He’s going into the biggest tournament of his life and he’s rocked up with silver hair – that just tells me everything you need to know about him."
