Pep Guardiola believes Mikel Arteta possesses three key qualities that mean the Arsenal board should back him, despite the Gunners’ shocking 5-0 loss to Man City.
Arteta’s side faced the Citizens at the Etihad Stadium earlier today, and were 2-0 down within 12 minutes thanks to goals from Ilkay Gundogan and Ferran Torres.
After Grant Xhaka received a straight red card for his challenge on Joao Cancelo 20 minutes later, the game was as good as gone for the North London side.
Goals from Gabriel Jesus and Rodri either side of the half-time whistle added insult to injury for Arteta, and Torres capped off a wonderful day at the office with his second goal late on in the second half.
Despite his side's dominant win, which continued Arsenal’s poor start to the season, Guardiola believes former colleague Arteta has the necessary qualities to succeed as the Gunners’ manager.
"I worked with him [Arteta] for three years,” Guardiola told BT Sport following his side's impressive victory.
“What I learned from him was that he’s a good manager. The character, the personality, the leadership.

“We were sad when we left and people respected that. It isn’t the squad that he wants because they’ve had six to seven injuries and really important players. Ben White, Thomas Partey, for example, and he cannot use them.
“So, all the managers need the squad. For us, Kevin [De Bruyne] and Phil [Foden] are out, but the others are fit.
“I can handle that myself, so I’m a big fan of him. I’m pretty sure if they trust him, he will do a good job at Arsenal."

Despite his “character, personality and leadership”, Arteta’s position at Arsenal seems increasingly under pressure.
Since the start of the season, the Gunners have lost all three of their Premier League matches, conceding nine goals without scoring.
Arteta’s side rebounded following their 2-0 loss at home to Chelsea with a 6-0 thrashing of West Bromwich Albion in the Carabao Cup earlier this week.
However, today’s drubbing at the hands of Guardiola’s Man City suggests Arsenal remain some way off the pace in the race for continental football.
