Peter Moore feared Liverpool Premier League title bid would be stopped by Covid

Peter Moore feared Liverpool's Premier League title triumph was going to be prevented by the "self-interest" of other club amid the Covid-19 outbreak.

The Reds' former chief executive said many at Anfield worried that last season was going to be written off, extending the club's 30-year wait for the title.

By the time football was shut down amid the worsening coronavirus pandemic back in March, Liverpool were well on course for a 19th top-flight crown having opened up a huge gap at the top of the Premier League.

But plans to finish the season were shrouded in uncertainty for several weeks, raising the prospect of the season being declared null and void.

But football was eventually brought back behind closed doors and Jurgen Klopp's side finished the job – although they were unable to celebrate in front of their fans.

But Moore said in the early weeks of the lockdown, he feared the Reds would not be crowned champions with some clubs happy for the season to be wiped from the slate.

“I was worried in the first couple of weeks,” Moore told BBC Sport.

“These were unprecedented times and we were all trying to figure out what it meant and how long it could go on for.

"There were some calls to erase the season as though it had never happened."

Moore, who parted company with Liverpool in August, said talks were frantic as clubs desperately sought to find a solution.

“The 20 clubs usually meet once a quarter. We had 17 shareholder meetings in less than 90 days," he said.

“There was self-interest from teams who felt threatened. It is tough to argue against them if your livelihood depends on it.
