Pique backs Barcelona wonderkid linked with Liverpool to be best in the world

Gerard Pique has backed Barcelona's teenage prodigy Gavi to become one of the best players in the world.

Gavi is one of the brightest young talents at the Nou Camp and has evolved into a key performer for the Catalan giants as they bid to put their financial woes behind them. Fortunes have improved under Xavi Hernandez after the legendary midfielder was handed the reins back in November, with Barca currently second in La Liga.

The 17-year-old midfielder is only under contract for another year, and there have been fears in Catalunya that he could leave the club for free if a new deal isn't secured quickly. Gavi has, as a result, been linked with a host of clubs, including Liverpool. The Reds are believed to be monitoring his situation ahead of a potential move.

And Pique is confident that the teenager will become one of the best players in the world. And the veteran defender didn't hesitate to name Gavi – alongside fellow Barca starlet Perdi – when asked who he could see going on to become one of the best player's in the world.

Speaking on The Overlap, Pique said: "I think Pedri has a lot of chances, Gavi is also very very good for his age. We have great talents in Barcelona right now. They have to grow, and they will be better. But right now, still, they are very good."

Barcelona officials reportedly met with Gavi's representatives on Friday to try and iron out a new contract for the wonderkid. Gavi's new contract will apparently have a release clause of €1billion (£858m) included in it.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, Barca head coach Xavi discussed the importance of securing a new deal for Gavi. He said: "It’s an important renewal, I said several times that he is important for the present and the future," he said.

"I have a god relationship with his agent. I think both sides want to renew, it will be important news for Cules.”
