Gary Lineker has joked "game's gone" after learning of the footballer who was reportedly sacked for farting and laughing about it.

Former Lyon defender Marcelo had his contract terminated by the Ligue 1 club earlier this year, with L'Equipe, via GFFN, reporting it was because he let rip in the changing room and sparked laughter amongst his team-mates following a 3-0 defeat in which he'd scored an own-goal.

Lineker, who infamously pooed himself while playing for England at the 1990 World Cup, replied: "Dropped for farting? These days I’d get a lifetime ban for s******* on a pitch. Game’s gone."

One fan replied: "Not often a player is accused of literally making a stink…" Ever the social media joker, Lineker added: "Must be a wind up."

The striker-turned-Match of the Day host often pokes fun at himself for the lowest, and smelliest, point of his legendary career. When footage of a dog pooing on a pitch went viral last year, he wrote: “Always good to see clips of when I played.”

The incident which saw Lineker wiping himself clean on the grass in England's opening game of Italia '90 against Republic of Ireland was long debated, but he has opened up on it in recent years.

Speaking on a Match of the Day podcast in 2020, he recalled: "I'd been ill overnight and it was the opening day of the cup and I'd woken up a few times with diarrhoea, etc. I didn't want to tell Bobby Robson because I thought he might leave me out of the team, and I wanted to play, as always.

"I sort of fell to the ground and relaxed for a second and it just went 'boom'. It was like, 'Oh my god,' but it was everywhere. There's a bit if you ever see the footage, where Gary Stevens comes over and asks what's wrong.

"And I go, 'I've s*** myself'. I just didn't know what to do. Thank god I had dark blue shorts on that day. I'm shovelling it out and rubbing myself on the grass like a dog. It was amazing how much space I found after that though, I was stinking."
