Chelsea saw their Champions League hopes fade in a second-half lesson by Bayern Munich on Tuesday.
The Blues had produced a sturdy display to keep the scores level at half-time, but their good work was undone in three minutes.
Former Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry grabbed a quickfire double to put Chelsea on the backfoot at Stamford Bridge, before Robert Lewandowski added a third soon after.
The duo combined for both Gnabry's goals, with Lewandowski giving his teammate a simple tap-in to open the scoring, before sliding him through to double their advantage.
Alphonso Davies then provided Lewandowski his own chance to get on the scoresheet, racing down the left before cutting it back for the Pole to finish and all-but seal the tie.
To add insult to injury, Chelsea then had Marcos Alonso sent off late on for swinging an arm at Lewandowski to earn himself a red.
Here are John Cross's player ratings from Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea
Caballero 6
Quick off his line, alert and did well again. No quick way back for Kepa.
James 5
Looks a big prospect but still a work in progress as Gnabry made it tough.
Azpilicueta 5
At fault for both goals, a slip and switched off. A night to forget.
Christensen 5
Wearing a protective face mask, this was the stuff of nightmares. Exposed.
Rudiger 6
Pick of the defenders because of his pace, but still not a very good night.
Alonso 6
Sent off. Looked very edgy, Coman caused problems, went close with with one shot.
Jorginho 5
Booked. What a crazy yellow for dissent, now misses return leg.
Kovacic 7
Chelsea’s best player, picked his passes and got attacks moving.
Barkley 5
Disappointing. Struggled to build on Saturday’s excellent display.
Mount 5
Worked and tried hard, but very little came off. Disappointing.
Giroud 5
Just did not happen for him, Boateng got the better of him all night.
